"Hecuba use melodies so minimal it seems like there’s a whole other chunk of EP dubbed away to nothing—ghost notes in Isabelle’s vocals and ghost orchestras dialed down to zero, leaving songs that sound colossal in headphones just because of all the empty space. Quickies “Hey Sir” (Terry Riley at boot-camp cadence) and “Yes” (“Y-E-S!” til your eyes roll sideways) bracket the title track, which is a slow-motion snake-charmer song with a sweetheart chorus and a line just for Yoko Ono—there’s a lot of the spirit of thin ice here. (Lucky Dragons’ remix is ridiculous—speed at +16 and vocals in rounds make a soundtrack for happy hyperventilation.) Hecuba also have a nice trick where moments of huge goofiness (sped vox for “He’s my Tom, and I’m his Jerry!” or the Sam Cooke-as-Roky Erickson-as-Flight-of-the-Conchords interlude in “Ch-Changes”) roll into moments of real and weird and unexpected soul, and so “Ch-Changes” doubles its charm every measure until the drums finally topple over. An EP that hides a lot inside a little."
